Why Your Reputation is Your Most Important Asset When Selling Online by Bonnie Stasser

My hobby is to collect Breyer and other horse models. Maybe you too collect some item as a hobby, whether it is horse models or something else, and you have been doing it for a while. You have added onto your collection substantially over the years and now you are running out of room. What do you do? If you are like most collectors, you decide to sell some of your collection, just to update or refine it of course.

If you are new to selling online, you might have some questions. The first couple of questions you are probably asking are: "How do I get back the money I have invested?" and "How do I get the best price?". But the question you really should be asking is "With so many sellers out there, how do I stand out in the crowd?" The answer is by being the being the best, most trusted seller you can be.

Whether you having been selling on the internet for years or you are new to it, you should always be striving to build a online persona that your buyers will trust. To understand this, put yourself in the buyer's shoes for a moment. They want what you are selling, but they hestitate, why? Because they are afraid that they will not get what they paid for. Perhaps they have had a bad experience with receiving a product that didn't match the description. Or maybe they just don't think you will live up to your end of the bargain. Your goal is to put those fears to rest.

So first, before you even list your first model, you really need to ask yourself questions from the buyer’s point of view. You have been there in their shoes, building your collection, so you know the answers. Ask yourself, who do you want to buy from and why? What makes the difference to you? Would you buy from yourself? Do you willingly buy from someone with a bad reputation or do you prefer to buy from someone with a good reputation? Most often people will spend more money with a seller that has a good reputation. So you need to work on building a great reputation and trust with your buyers.
To understand the concept of a "reputation" let's compare it to an egg. An egg is made of a very delicate material, but when you push on the ends, it is very strong. However, if you put some pressure on the middle of the egg, it’s a little weaker. And if there is the slightest little chip in the surface anywhere, it will certainly weaken the entire shell and the egg can break. One bad report about you as a seller can be like a chip in the eggshell. If the chip is big enough, the shell will break and we all know how difficult it is to put back together a shattered eggshell. So don't let your reputation get shattered, protect it at all costs, even if it means making a little less money now. In the long run it will pay off.

So let's look at how to build your reputation. The first rule is to be honest. Be honest about what you are selling; tell the whole story about it, all the bumps, bruises, scrapes, scratches, the whole nine yards. People are more forgiving of faults when they know about them. If the faults are not mentioned they will be less forgiving because it will be an unpleasant surprise. You don’t want to come across as if you are hiding something.

People are also more willing to buy from someone they know, By building your reputation; people will get to know you. Remember, collectors talk, they tell each other about their experiences with another collector or seller. Even in the world of the internet, word of mouth is important and does travel.If there is a bad story, human nature is to tell everyone about that bad experience as soon as possible. Thus a customer’s bad experience with you can hurt you big time and last for quite a while. It is the chip in the eggshell that will be very difficult for you to repair. A good experience will not go unnoticed, but be patient, as it does take some time to get that word out and for people to pay attention.

With each sale and interaction with your buyer ask yourself these questions:

Do I respond to questions with a pleasant tone?

Do I ship quickly and when promised?

Do I do a follow up email/letter with the buyer?

Make a list of the best experiences you have had as a buyer, things the seller did to make you feel special. Then ask yourself, what else can I add to that experience for my customers to make it even better? And, very important here, Can I do this consistently with everyone I sell to?

Set your core belief of who you want to BE as a seller and fix the chips before you start. It takes time to build a strong foundation, however without that foundation; your chances of making a profitable sale are very slim.
