There are plenty of great used cars out there waiting for a home and if you look around and go to the right places, then there's no reason why they should be any worse than new cars †just a considerable amount cheaper.

That said there is certainly a lot of variation between used cars. While some used cars are just as efficient still as their new counterparts, that doesn't mean that all of them will provider as good a service and that none of them will have any problems. You need to be vigilant when looking for a used car to make sure you are getting a good deal and that the car will stay operational and safe long after you've made a purchase.

First of all you need to make sure that you are getting your used cars from somewhere trustworthy. Getting them from car dealers or from traders that facilitate the buying and selling of used cars is a good idea because it will give you some come back. That then means that if you have any problem that you can contact them and lodge a complaint. Likewise it means that they have accountability and to maintain a good business they will need to do their best to provide a good service at all times. This will also mean that you can look up the service, read reviews and look at the website †to just generally ascertain whether they are good sellers. This is far preferable to buying from strangers where you will not have much guarantee if anything goes wrong.

You also need to make sure that you are getting all of the documentation that comes with your car. You should get a full service history which tells you about any problems that your car might have had in the past and about all previous MOTs, you should get documents explaining the previous ownership of the car and you should get the manual and other instructional documents from the manufacturer. You'll also get tax documents from the previous owners. All of this is important and you should be wary of cars that don't come with their service history as it might mean that something has been covered up.

The service history of the car can also tell you some more about it. For instance if you see that the car has had a lot of problems throughout its lifespan and that it has not often passed its MOTs then this can sometimes be a warning sign that the car is something of a bad egg. However if it has recently had a lot of changes made and been fully serviced then chances are that it's in good health. Things like a change of engine etc can mean your car is almost as good as new. Similarly a good warning sign is rust on the body of the car †as once this sets in there is little you can do to save it. A little rust is normal, but where it's extensive around the bottom you might want to start worrying. The documents will also tell you about previous owners †and if it's gone through lots of them then you might start to wonder why no one has kept it long. It can even be worth calling up to discuss the car with those who've had it before.
