Introduction
Electric transformers are devices used for transforming higher voltage to a lower voltage. These devices perform electromagnetic induction for the transfer of alternating current from one circuit to the next. In other words, a power transformer is an electrical device used in increasing or reducing the incoming voltage of alternating current.
Configuration of electric transformers
Electric transformers comprise two sets of coils which are connected to the magnetic field. The windings or the coils which function as the electricity conductors are of two types - primary and secondary. The coils are wound around a core that is ferromagnetic in nature. The core of an electric transformer can be toroidal or laminated. The configuration of the transformers can of two types. These can either be a single phase or a three phase configuration.

Use of electric transformers

Electric transformers are most widely and most importantly used for distributing electricity from the power stations to businesses and homes. At the powerhouses, electricity is of a very high voltage and the electric transformer lowers the voltage when it reaches the substations. On passing the current to a smaller transformer, the voltage is further reduced. The process continues until the power comes to a usable level.

Tips

One must always look out for the safety standards when purchasing an electric transformer. The efficiency of a transformer can be easily checked by using surge protectors. The surge protectors are devices which ensure that the appliance is safe from voltage spikes. Good transformers are the ones which have in built surge protection.
The specifications that determine the strength of a power transformer include:
